Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise at the age of just a young girl. Aunt Denise was a nurse, who did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her days to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay was captivated by the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt showed it to DuVernay. DuVernay saw how art was an effective tool for promoting social activism. DuVernay learned to be socially aware from her mother. DuVernay was a child with her family in Compton and spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. Her father recalled watching the civil rights march of the past along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma influence her later on to create a film about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation she was enrolled at an institution called the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with qualifications in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay began producing television news at the age of a young student. She began her career as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to watch and search the home for a specific Jury member. In the course of her duties she was dissatisfied with journalistic work and entered the publicity business. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a junior publicist shortly after graduating from college. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. In addition, she launched several lifestyle and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
